New York Guard is A Family Tradition

CAMP SMITH--(Left to Right) New York Guard soldiers and siblings Capt. Lubamyr Shchur, HQ, Capt. Scarpelli-Havraniak, 244th Medical Clinic, and Sgt. Maj. Taras Szczur, HQ enlist their nephew, 17 year old Michael Schur of Tarrytown, New York into the New York Guard at Camp Smith, NY on Saturday, December 19th.

Standing by Private Schur are (left to right) his sister Nina, father Steven, mother Sonya, uncle Michael Havraniak, (front row left to right)brother Mark, grandmother Emily, and Sgt. Maj. Szczur's fiancee Yvanna Iannelli.

Sgt. Maj. Szczur, a former United States Marine Corps sergeant, has served in the NY Guard since 2001. He recruited his brother Lubamyr and sister Sophia into the service, and now his nephew Michael. Newly enlisted NY Guard Private Michael Schur is active in community affairs, having made two trips to Mexico and one to Haiti with his church group to aid the poor of those nations. He is also active with the Boy Scouts of America. Michael plans on applying to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
