Remembering Our 21st President

ALBANY -- Brigadier General Patrick Murphy, Director of Joint Staff for the New York National Guard (left) and Chaplain (Capt.) Glen Lightfoot, present a wreath at the gravesite of the 21st President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur at Albany Rural Cemetery on Oct. 5.
The annual wreath laying event was in honor of the 180th anniversary of his birthday.
President Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vt. and attended Union College in Schenectady and later practiced law in New York City. He also was a member of New York?s State Militia and served as Judge Advocate of the Second Brigade.
In 1881, he was elected as Vice-President on the Republican ticket with James A. Garfield. Upon the death of Garfield, who was slain at a train station in Washington, D.C. Arthur became president in 1881 and served until 1885. He died a year later in 1886.
