New York Guardsmen Assist Afghans

UD KHIEL VILLAGE, KABUL, AFGHANISTAN-- New York Army National Guard Captain Joseph Merrill from Binghamton, NY and commander of Security Force Delta of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix, works with a translator to direct a father seeking medical attention for his son during a medical treatment visit conducted on August 7.
More than 1000 residents of Ud Kheil village were treated by Afghan medical staff and received medicine, vitamins and personal items through a joint assistance operation on August 7th. The medical assistance visit was part of a partnership between the village and International Security and Assistance Force Soldiers stationed at Camp Phoenix in Kabul, the home of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix -- and Afghan National Security Forces and coalition allies.
The operation was held at the girls? school, a project completed along with the boys? school in the spring. That work is part of Camp Phoenix?s ongoing outreach efforts and support to the Afghan government and its people.
About 1,700 members of the New York Army National Guard are serving in Afghanistan as part of the mission to train the Afghan National Army and Police
