The NYS Battle Flag Collection includes two silk swallowtail guidons carried by the 86th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. Each guidon conforms to the “stars and stripes” pattern prescribed in General Order No. 4, dated January 18, 1862. Both guidons include bronze-colored, painted stars in the canton in the typical concentric circle pattern. One flag includes all of its original stars (35). The other flag includes only 30 stars from most likely a 35 star pattern. Both flags do have losses, most notably to the fly ends.
