New York State
A significant part of the NYS Military Museum's permanent collection is a group of nearly 2,000 flags dating from the War of 1812 to the present. Included in this nationally significant collection is the largest collection of state Civil War battle flags in the country. To insure the flags' long-term preservation, textile conservators from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) recommended a program of care to include the establishment of a flag archive. Thanks to the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature beginning in 2000, efforts to protect a precious part of New York's legacy are now underway. While state funds have helped launch the product to reach its goal, private and corporate donations are welcome.
