History

Prior to completion of this armory, the 8th occupied the following locations: 

  • Centre Market Armory on Grand and Centre streets 1830's - 1871
  • Upper floors of a commercial building at 226 West 23rd Street (between 7th and 8th avenues) 1871 - 1878
  • Private house on Seventh Avenue (between West 34th and West 35th streets) holding drills in the nearby State Arsenal 1879 - 1880
  • Loft in the Old Broadway Stage stables at 9th Avenue and West 27th Street 1880 - 1887
  • 71st Regiment's old armory on West 36th Street at Broadway 1887 - 1889

Drill shed shared with Squadron A Armory (built in 1894-1895) on Madison Avenue which was located behind and attached to the rear of the 8th facility. The 8th moved to the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx in 1913. Squadron A remained at the facility until it was closed in 1969.
